要旨 This study clarified the old image attached to the term innovation, with changes in the use of the word “motion” in physics since the 18th century. The results reveal that the old perception of motion persists in discussions on economy and society. For a long time, the economy and society have been observed with something visible and tangible. In physics, too, discussions on motion have been ongoing since ancient Greece, but it was first necessary to discuss and formulate inertia for such discussions to go beyond the “tautological word-play” to generate technology and businesses. Even though the concept of time has been already diffused by the clock, social sciences continue to suffer from the idea of science invented before the 19th century. If the social sciences had achieved advancement of learning similar to physics, innovation would have been observed and described as motion or reactions to the advancement of learning and information technologies in the world.
